Περίληψη: Σκοπός του σεμιναρίου θα είναι η εξέταση του ρόλου των ελλήνων λογίων, του έργου τους, των πολιτισμικών επικοικωνιών τους με πνευματικούς και πολιτικούς κύκλους εντός και εκτός της Οθωμανικής Αυτοκρατορίας και η συμβολή τους στην ανάδειξη κοινωνικών, εθνικών και άλλων ταυτοτήτων στο χώρο της διασποράς αλλά και σε αυτόν της Νοτιοανατολικής Ευρώπης, από την περίοδο της Αναγέννησης ώς τις παραμονές της Ελληνικής Επανάστασης του 1821.

Summary: The seminar seeks to investigate the role of the Greek Literati – Intellectuals – Scholars, their work and their relations with intellectual and political cycles within and outside the Ottoman Empire, as well as their contribution in the emergence of social, ethnic and other identities in the Diaspora and in South-Eastern Europe, from the era of the Renaissance to the eve of the Greek Revolution of 1821.

Περίληψη: Το σεμινάριο θα εστιάσει στις πολλαπλές (θεσμικές, οικονομικές, πολιτικές) σχέσεις ανάμεσα στην Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία -και ιδιαίτερα το Ορθόδοξο Πατριαρχείο Κωνσταντινουπόλεως- και την οθωμανική διοίκηση κατά την περίοδο που ξεκινά από την ΄Αλωση και λήγει με το τέλος της περιόδου ακμής του οθωμανικού κράτους (τέλη 16ου αι.). Η προσέγγιση του παραπάνω ζητήματος θα γίνει με την αντιπαραβολή κυρίως οθωμανικών και ελληνικών πηγών που αφορούν στην Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία. Ανάμεσα στα επί μέρους ζητήματα που θα εξετασθούν θα είναι η επιβίωση θεσμών από την βυζαντινή περίοδο, η ανάμιξη της οθωμανικής διοίκησης στην εσωτερική λειτουργία του εκκλησιαστικού μηχανισμού, η πολιτική αντιμετώπιση από την Εκκλησία της οθωμανικής εξουσίας, καθώς και η διεθνής εμβέλεια της Ορθόδοξης Εκκλησίας κάτω από οθωμανική πολιτική εξουσία (σχέσεις με την Ρωμαιοκαθολική Εκκλησία, τους Διαμαρτυρομένους, πολιτικές οντότητες της Δυτικής Ευρώπης αλλά και την ορθόδοξη Μοσχοβία (μετέπειτα Ρωσία)), Τέλος θα εξετασθεί αν τα παραπάνω έχουν στατική ή δυναμική μορφή και εξέλιξη.

Summary: The seminar will focus on the multiple relations (institutional, economic, political) between the Orthodox Church –and especially the Greek-Orthodox Patriarchate of Constantinople– and the Ottoman administration during the period beginning from the Fall of Constantinople (1453) till the end of the heyday of the Ottoman state (late 16th century). The above mentioned issue will be discussed mainly through confrontation between Ottoman and Greek sources related to the Orthodox Church. Among special topics to be discussed will be the survival of Byzantine institutions, the interference of the Ottoman administration into the functions of the ecclesiastical mechanism, the political considerations of the Church towards the Ottoman administration, as well as the international presence of the Orthodox Church under Ottoman political power (relations with the Roman Catholic Church, the Protestants, some political entities in Western Europe as well as Orthodox Moskovy (later Russia)). Finally there will be an attempt to examine if all the above mentioned topics had static shape or dynamic evolution.
